About Kim Murray, Instructor
I have more than 20 years of experience teaching flute, clarinet and piano, and started performing over 30 years ago. Over the years I have developed a profound appreciation for the teachers in my life who were dedicated educators, consistently supportive and positive, and gave me the tools necessary to continually grow as a musician and person. I aspire to to be such a teacher to my students.
In addition to running my own private teaching studio for nearly 20 years, I have been a music instructor at the Levine Summer Music & Arts Day Camp at the Strathmore location, and served as head band director at Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, VA where I directed the middle and high school bands, the school Pep Band, and the pit orchestra for the annual school musical. I am a former member of the faculty at Centerstage Academy in Yorktown, VA where I was a private lesson instructor, small ensemble coach, and summer music workshop instructor. I am former Music Director of the Middle School Summer Band Program at Emerson Middle School in Park Ridge, IL, and currently serve as a regular clinician for the music program at the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD and other schools throughout the area.
My formal education includes Bachelors degrees in English and Music Performance from the Oberlin College and Oberlin College-Conservatory, and a Masters degree in Music Education from Northwestern University.
My professional memberships include the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the National Flute Association, the Flute Society of Washington, and the International Clarinet Association.
